England football legend Peter Shilton has honoured Shropshire’s top sports stars at a special event in the county.
The record caps holder was at Shrewsbury Town’s Prostar Stadium for the annual Energize Awards, run by Energize Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, the county’s sports partnership in association with Paycare.
The ceremony recognises and celebrates local achievement in sport and physical activity from across the area.
Tamsin Burton, for Energize, said the event was a roaring success, with Mr Shilton staying until the end.
She said: “Peter Shilton was a real gentleman and was perfect for the event, he stayed and chatted to everybody and was actually the last to leave.”
The former goalkeeper, who represented the country 125 times, made a speech before the awards were handed out.
Amongst the winners were Beijing 2008 Paralympic silver medallist Mickey Bushell, from Ketley Bank, Telford, who was awarded the title Sportsperson of the Year. Diane Halford, of Aqueduct, Telford was named Volunteer of the Year and Ben Riekstins won the Young Leader of the Year award for showing outstanding levels of commitment to his own personal development and to sport as a whole.
Telford’s Wrekin Risers BMX Club scooped the club of the year title.
