Hurren cleared for Blyth Cup date

Friday 23rd October 2009, 12:26PM BST.

larry-chambersMidfielder Gavin Hurren has been cleared to make his FA Cup debut for AFC Telford United in tomorrow’s fourth qualifying round clash at Blyth Spartans.

Hurren, currently in a second month’s loan from Tamworth, had been ruled out by his parent club for the clashes against Pegasus Juniors and Worcester City in the previous rounds.

But the Lambs have now relented, much to the delight of Telford’s assistant manager Larry Chambers.

“Tamworth have always been loathe to make him available for FA Cup matches up to now in case it left them exposed later on,” he revealed.

“But they have now agreed to let him play without us having to commit ourselves to anything beyond this second month’s loan.

“He’s an extra body for us and he’s keen to play. I’m pleased and grateful to Tamworth for their help.”

Tomorrow’s clash will mark manager Rob Smith and Chambers’ 200th game in charge of the Bucks – ironically against the same opposition they faced in their first game back in February 2006.

“Let’s hope it’s a happy occasion and we’re celebrating come quarter-to-five tomorrow,” said Chambers.

“I can’t believe we’ve been here that long and the time’s flown by, but that’s all in the past and it’s about what happens now. We’ve got a chance to progress on the FA Cup and that’s what we’re focusing on.”

The Telford No 2 believes Blyth will provide tricky opposition, and he only needs to look back to their 6-1 victory over Hinckley in the Blue Square North last Saturday for evidence of what they can do.

“If we were to bring them back to Telford for a replay on Tuesday that wouldn’t be a bad result, but it would be nice to get it done at the first chance,” he added.

“The main thing is to make sure we are in the draw for the first round proper on Sunday.”

Centre-back Stuart Whitehead (head) and midfielders Carl Rodgers (toe) and Phil Trainer (hip) are all expected to be available.
