Golden chance for us to call Griffin’s bluff

Friday 23rd October 2009, 12:21PM BST.

POLITICS Election 164836I am glad Nick Griffin was on BBC’s Question Time last night, giving millions a golden opportunity to tumble him. He blathers on about big topics, which ought to be left to big boys and girls.

They shouldn’t be mangled by a pompous pipsqueak more suited to a playground bully.

He’s a swaggerer, a bluffer of the first order. Even leaving his worst opinions out of it, Mr Griffin is an empty vessel rattling with narrow prejudice; not to mention his extraordinary, heaving laughter at the most inappropriate moments.

Of course immigration dominated the programme – we learned little about his party’s other policies.

But unfortunately, the BNP has found a handy platform in current clumsy immigration policies, which as Baroness Sayeeda Warsi (Shadow Minister for Community, Cohesion and Social Action) said, is a debate not about colour but about resources. And all parties should twig that a general disillusionment with mainstream politics has also fuelled discontent.

But listen, this man is not the answer.

Differences in policy apart, when challenged on his worst prejudices such as his one-time Holocaust view – like it didn’t happen – Mr Griffin blathered: “I cannot explain why I used to say those things and can’t tell you the extent that I have changed my mind” then rambled on about something to do with European law.

Labour grandee Jack Straw roared that there was no law here to prevent such explanations.

Mr Straw set out his own stall by pointing out that we won two world wars because thousands of people from other races fought and died with us.

But he himself did not escape without audience criticism for alleged dereliction of sensible immigration policies.

Though he also rightly said of the contentious panellist: “The moment anyone puts an uncomfortable quote to him he says ‘I didn’t say that’ but I saw and heard these things — this guy is the Dr Strangelove of British politics.”

Former National Front member Griffin is on record as saying that Britain “is a multi-racial hell hole”, labels Islam a wicked faith and gays as “creepy”.

The Baroness reckons that: “He comes here and tries to sell whatever message he wants. He preaches extremism in the name of Christianity and brings that faith into disrepute as well.”

Maybe the whole performance was best summed up by African-American playwright Bonnie Greer when asked if the programme had been a Christmas present for the BNP.

She replied: “The British people have got too much common sense.”

Ditto to that!

    The mainstream political parties have proved via the expenses scandal, inept handling of the economy, crime, war, immigration and just about everything else that they are incompetent and morally bankrupt. This opens up the door to extremists. The BNP and it’s policies are unacceptable to most people, but they will find a following due to their being no-one else who has any credibility. If the Tories, Liberals, and especially New Labour (Tories Mark 2), MPs would clean up their act their would be no place for the BNP. Griffin and his cronies are irrelevant – the British people are fed up with the way things are and would elect Osama bin Laden if it would get rid of the other idiots.

    Griffin was right – there is a European law against Holocaust Denial so if he’d have given his reasons for once having been a ‘denier’ then he would have been in contravention of European law.
    Straw (grandee?!) was technically right in stating that no such law exists here but if Griffin had said what Straw wanted to say and ever traveled to mainland Europe then he could have been arrested.
    Straw knew that.

    Well, I never thought I would see the day I actually would congratulate Shirley Tart on an article she has written!

    To describe Nick Griffen as: [a pompous pipsqueak more suited to a playground bully]
    may be to some degree accurate but the same description could have been applied to Hitler and it did not prevent his progress in politics.

    People want simplistic, mummy or daddy will make it better or know best, politicians. That is the very reason Margaret Thatcher got away with so much for so long.

    If is a choice by the BIG BOY’s or Girls I will go with the small fish whether that is UKIP, or heaven forbid the BNP.

    The issue at hand here is the British public have lost all faith in the political system. This is why the smaller parties are gaining more votes. Bashing Nick Griffin is not going to make me support labour or the tories or Jack Straw’s failure in his time in office.

    However I feel we must equate the BNP to a naughty young child.

    When you are faced with a naughty young child you do not do the following.

    1) Pay the naughty young child lots of attention hence giving it the respect of its peers.

    2) Respond to the naughty young child in a similar fashion i.e. Protestors outside BBC (Violence begets violence)

    As supernanny would suggest you ignore the naughty young child by putting them on the naughty step for 5 or 10mins and then you explain to the naughty young calmly why its behaviour is wrong.

    A transcript for jpt(#7), who defended Nick Griffin’s right to avoid answering questions on prime-time TV.

    ————–

    Questioner: ‘Winston Churchill put everything on the line to ensure that my ancestors were not slaughtered in the concentration camps. But here sits a man, who says that’s a myth just like a flat world was a myth. How could you say that? How could you?’

    Nick Griffin: I cannot explain why I used to say those things. (Audience laughs and boos) I can’t tell you any more than I can tell you why I have changed my mind. I can’t tell you the extent to which I’ve changed my mind because European law prevents me from doing so.

    Jack Straw: There is no law here that stops you explaining yourself. As the Justice Minister, I promise you, if you want to explain why you don’t believe it… (cheers from audience).

    Bonnie Greer: Come on, Nick, tell us.

    David Dimbleby: You have the freedom now to explain it….

    Nick Griffin: But unfortunately the French courts and the German courts would not recognise that freedom.

    Jack Straw: I will sort that out for you as well.

    David Dimblebly: I have a question. Have you actually changed your mind? Or do you only say that you have changed your mind because the law makes it illegal to be a Holocaust denier?

    Nick Griffin: I have changed my mind. A lot of it is about figures, and one of the key things which makes me change my mind is British radio intercepts of German transmissions about the brutal mass murder of innocent Jews on the Eastern Front during anti-partisan warfare, which changed the figures greatly.

    Jack Straw: What about the Holocaust? What about Auschwitz? People can see with their own eyes what happened. It didn’t need a subsequent radio intercept to find out that people were gassed at Auschwitz.

    —————————————

    What do you think of Griffin’s ‘radio intercept’ argument, jpt?

    John Howard (#3) you said that people would vote BNP because the other parties don’t have ‘any credibility’.

    I am not a supporter of the 2 main parties, but if I had to choose between them and a brutal, ideological, fundamentalist terrorist, like Osama bin Laden, who (like the BNP) wants to turn us all against each other for his own cynical ends, then I would support them wholeheartedly.

    Would you really say that Straw’s comments about Auschwitz don’t have ‘any credibility’ next to Nick Griffin’s pathetic ‘radio intercept’ argument, John Howard?

    Phil Reddall from North Shropshire BNP, you said, ‘I am happy for Shirley Tart to have her views so long as the Shropshire Star continue to publish my letters.’

    What happens if the Shropshire Star do not publish your letters? Will Shirley Tart no longer be allowed to have views, Mr Redall?

    A fine article by Shirley Tart. Nick Griffin was shown to be the incompetent and intellectually limited politician he is. He was supposed to be the BNPs main weapon – a political heavyweight no less- how much they must regret the “countdown to Question Time” on their website. He was humiliated in front of 8 million people and then claims firstly that it was a success because of 3000 potential recruits (out of 8 million viewers), and secondly that he was wronged because the audience and panelists gave him a hard time. They gave him a hard time because he is a racist buffoon. Despite the BNPs claims and some of the posts on this page they are a minority party that most people disagree strongly with. I’m so glad the “leftist BBC” bowed to the BNP demands and granted them a very public seat on a debate panel. Reap what you sow Mr Griffin. The BNP got its publicity and will have to suffer the mocking consequences of most decent people.

    The BNP’s policy is to:

    - Deport all the two million plus who are here illegally;

    - Deport all those who commit crimes and whose original nationality was not British;

    - Review all recent grants of residence or citizenship to ensure they are still appropriate;

    - Offer generous grants to those of foreign descent resident here who wish to leave permanently;

    - Stop all new immigration except for exceptional cases;

    - Reject all asylum seekers who passed safe countries on their way to Britain.

    Ultimately the people will decide what they want. It is very easy to hold opinions on immigration and different cultures when one lives in a county like Shropshire where ‘multi-culturalism’ means a Chinese takeaway on a Friday evening.

    White liberal-Marxists are the only people on the face of our planet who denounce looking after one’s own interests as ‘racist’, and the irony of having an Asian lady, a Black lady and a Jewish man telling the English and British people there’s no such thing as ‘indigenous’ is a disgrace.

    I agree with Shirley in that I too would have liked to have heard more of the BNPs policies aired because, after reading the manifesto on the BNP website, the BNP would be a saviour for the disgusting mess this country is now in.

    Their stance on, for example, illegal immigrants, immigration policies, tackling crime & justice, bringing troops back from Afghanistan to defend OUR borders against terrorism etc. are all crucial. The Liberal luvvies like Shirley have now had a fair crack of the whip and have all but destroyed our once fine country. The cry of racism & nazis to a party who could sort out Britain is wearing pretty thin now and I think the general public at large are starting to see through the mainstream media’s attempt to smear the BNP name in any way possible.

    Well I have news for you Shirley, its not working, people are waking up. Residing in leafy green rural Shropshire and making statements like:

    “It is a joy to meet so many lovely people from across the globe who now live here and want to play a full part in our country and our communities. Becoming a British Citizen is not easy. It takes time, commitment and cash”.

    is at best naive. When Nick Griffin speaks of multi-cultural hell-holes, I totally agree, as most of our cities, especially Birmingham and London, are exactly like this. Try taking a trip to Tooting, South London, you will then get the picture.

    But don’t worry, Shirley, if things remain the same politically, it won’t be too long before all this “rich mixed cultural society” which as you say is a “blessing not a curse” will be enriching Shropshire.

    Why is it that the mainstream media and the liberal luvvies at large never want to talk about current BNP policies? I am sure if you go into the past of any politician in this country, you will find they have said things they regret saying.

    In 2009, Mr Nick Griffin has stated he is not a Nazi, Fascist or Holocaust denier.

    Maybe ‘liberal luvvies’ and most decent, ordinary people in this country would actually prefer to be represented by people who demonstrably tell the TRUTH on prime time TV.

    Maybe they believe in solidarity and don’t want to be represented by people who want to turn communities, families and individuals against each other.

    The mainstream media, ‘liberal luvvies’ and most decent British people probably feel that it is more important to unpick the BNP’s past and present lies BEFORE dealing with BNP policies.

    If Nick Griffin says that the Holocaust never happened and then on prime time TV says that he cannot explain why he said that or why ‘radio intercepts’ have changed his mind (see #21), then I think it is perfectly justified to call his supporters’ bluff in as public a way as possible.

    Did you find your leader’s argument convincing, Home Guard?

    You said, ‘in 2009, Mr Nick Griffin has stated he is not a Nazi, Fascist or Holocaust denier.’
