A McDouble, please

A flagship Shropshire fast-food restaurant is supersizing and leading a national drive to speed up sales.
McDonald’s at Telford’s Forge Retail Park has installed a dual-lane drive-through facility to enable staff to serve double the amount of customers at the same time.
It is one of just three stores in England operated by the burger giants to open the dual service for motorists to cope with expanding demand.
Despite government campaigns for healthier eating, McDonald’s has had its busiest summer ever with UK stores handling 100 million orders a month. Sales are up 12 per cent on last year and the firm admits it is benefiting from the recession as people turn to bargain-priced meals.
Keith Bridges, manager of the Forge Retail Park restaurant, said the spiralling sales figures were mirrored in Telford.
“The dual drive-through is proving to be a success because the sales growth is very healthy,” said Mr Bridges.
He said the dual-lane serveries were installed when the restaurant was refurbished in the summer.
“We are one of the pilot restaurants in the UK and McDonald’s bring people to Telford if they want to see how an outlet should operate. Corporately and technically we are one of the top restaurants in England,” added Mr Bridges.
The new dual lanes system allows cars to be guided into side-by-side lanes where menus are displayed on kerbside signs.
Two drivers can then ask for meals at the same time before being guided to the same serving hatch.
Other dual-lane schemes are planned for Tamworth in Staffordshire.

And sometimes it works… !
But they need to get better at serving food at an increased speed to keep up with the extra capacity provided to place orders.
It becomes doubly frustrating when you’re stuck in one of the lanes and nothing is moving.
It’s a great idea, but all parts of the chain – order, pay, collect – have to work to make it really ‘Fast Food’.

I have been there twice since this change and wont be going again. I’ll stick to the Donnington one.
Staff arent capable of taking orders and taking cash from people further up the queue. Got my order wrong twice now. 2nd time i had to park up and it took over 30mins to get my food, which was missing items! if i hadnt have paid already i’d of left after 15mins. They serve too many cars then cant produce the food quick enough not to mention the nightmare parking for people waiting.

And sometimes it doesn’t work!
That McDonalds is the worst for having food ready, parking customers for 15+ minutes then when the food does come items are incorrect and / or missing. The new system just increased the amount of parked orders, pathetic.

Been there twice now and it hasn’t worked for me. 2nd time it took over 30minutes from taking my order to actually receiving my food which was missing items.
Only go to the Donnington one now. Always end up having to park up at the Telford one as they serve too many people and cant get the food out and when they do im sure they guess.

It’s McDonalds – what do you expect?
Look at it this way – they’re saving you all from coronary heart disease and contributing to reducing the Uk’s obesity rates!

Tony,
In your 30 minute wait, you could have prepared and cooked a healthy meal, probably for less than the cost of a McDonalds.
Why bother with fast food?
