Simpson’s loan deals feature Premier winger

Thursday 22nd October 2009, 1:10PM BST.

Paul Simpson Stuttering Shrewsbury Town today made a double raid on the loan market by signing Hull City winger Jamie Devitt and Waide Fairhurst of Doncaster for a month.

Devitt will be no stranger to Town fans after playing an instrumental role in their 2-1 defeat at the hands of Darlington last week.

The 19-year-old wide man was on loan at the Quakers, and took the free-kick which hit the post and struck the back of keeper Steve Phillips and went in for Darlington’s opening goal.

But Devitt’s Darlington deal has since expired and Town boss Paul Simpson acted swiftly to offer the Republic of Ireland youth international another taste of League Two football.

Striker Fairhurst, 20, arrives after scoring twice in his two starts – against West Brom and Ipswich – in the Championship this season.

“Waide has done well on his two starts for Doncaster this season and he has got an eye for goal,” said Town boss Simpson today.

“He’s a bit different to what we have got and it will help us out at a time when Dave Hibbert, Jake Robinson and Omer Riza are all out injured.”

On Devitt’s arrival, Simpson added: “I spoke to Brian Horton (Hull’s No 2) after the game last weekend and it had already been decided Jamie wouldn’t be staying at Darlington.

“He showed last week he can be threat on the left or the right, he’s good at setpieces and is a very forward thinking player.”

Simpson revealed the young duo will both go into the squad for Saturday’s home game with Aldershot.

“We have had three disappointing results and performances and I just felt we needed to freshen things up,” added Simpson.

Meanwhile, the Town boss is confident goalkeeper Phillips, full-back Dean Holden and midfielder Paul Murray will all be fit for the weekend.

The trio missed the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy defeat to Accrington Stanley on Tuesday evening with minor niggles but are all making encouraging progress to partly ease Town’s lengthy injury problems.
