Jobs hope as £13m surgery planned

Wednesday 21st October 2009, 10:36AM BST.

Up to 70 jobs could be created under plans to build a £13 million surgery in Shrewsbury.

Plans have been submitted to Shropshire Council for the complex near Shrewsbury Sports Village in Sundorne. It is expected to serve more than 15,000 patients and could be open within two years.

Matrix Medical, the company behind the scheme, says it wants to create the primary care centre along with a pharmacy.

The development will also include 160 car spaces, 34 cycle spaces and 10 disability spaces. Bosses say the plans will create about 70 full-time jobs.

They have applied to open the surgery from 8am until 6pm Monday to Friday, with a physiotherapy department open from 8am to 9pm Monday to Sunday.

A company statement said: “Two medical practices, Mount Pleasant Practice and Albert Road Surgery, are to be combined within one medical centre with a retail pharmacy.

“In addition, the centre is to house the PCT (Primary Care Trust) and will serve as the main PCT centre for the north of Shrewsbury.

“The PCT space, which is located at ground floor level, will provide dedicated NHS dentistry, phlebotomy, podiatry and general consult/ treatment areas.

“A six-bay physiotherapy suite with gymnasium is to be included together with seven treatment and consulting rooms for advanced primary care services.”
