Witnesses to a road accident which left two elderly Shropshire people needing hospital treatment after a car ploughed into Market Drayton Town Hall have spoken of their shock.
Shoppers, workers and motorists saw the drama unfold as a blue Vauxhall Astra mounted the pavement and smashed into the building yesterday afternoon, causing “quite a bit” of damage to the Town Hall site.
County and Town Councillor Roger Hughes had been on his way out of the building when the car burst through the wall.
He said he heard an “almighty bang” and saw the car break through the wall.
“Lots of people called the police and ambulance,” he said.
“The man was tipped out of his wheelchair and was on the floor by the side of the car and the lady was pinned under the front of the car against the wall.”
Councillor Hughes said onlookers had rushed to help the injured people.
“It was tremendous the way the public responded,” he added. “It was obviously an unfortunate accident, I would think it was a freak accident.”
Market Drayton Mayor Councillor Roy Aldcroft said he thought the woman who was injured had been pushing the wheelchair.
He said: “A car exited the car park and struck a pedestrian that was pushing an electric wheelchair.
“The car lost control heading out of the car park and struck the people.”
He added: “There was quite a bit of damage to the town hall, that’s a secondary thing.
“We are just hoping that both people involved in the collision are making some form of recovery in hospital.”
Civic leaders today said Market Drayton Town Hall was open for business as usual despite the incident on Frogmore Road car park at about 1.45pm yesterday.
Councillor Aldcroft said today initial repairs had been carried out to make the building safe to use.
