Hopes of appeal raising £10,000

Poppy Newtown’s poppy appeal is set to begin with a hope it can yet again break through the £10,000 mark of money raised for the Royal British Legion.

Poppy sellers will soon be out and about around the town and many shops will have collecting tins and poppies on their counters.

Deanna Williams, the Poppy Appeal Organiser for Newtown and Montgomeryshire, said the appeal raised £10,211 in the area last year and said she hoped people would be as generous this year.

The appeal will culminate in two events in Newtown, the Remembrance Day parade and the Armistice Day two minute silence.

Newtown silver band will be leading the Remembrance Day parade in Newtown this year.

Hundreds of people are expected to turn out to either take part in or watch the annual parade, one of the largest in Montgomeryshire.

The parade will form up outside the Monty Club at 10.40am to march to the War Memorial. Wreaths will be laid and there will be two minutes of silence at 11am before the parade marches to the Baptist Chapel for the Service of Remembrance.

Mrs Williams said both the Montgomery MP Lembit Opik and MEP Mick Bates would be taking part.
