Arrests after police stop van

Tuesday 20th October 2009, 11:32AM BST.

police-car-lights1Two men were arrested on suspicion of drugs offences after police officers swooped on a van in a quiet Shropshire street.

Sniffer dogs were brought in to help search the blue Ford Transit van.

The vehicle had been stopped for a routine check in Morfe Road, Bridgnorth, at about 4pm yesterday.

Two men were arrested and are helping police with their inquiries.

A spokesman for West Mercia Police said last night: “The officers obviously must have had reasons to stop the vehicle and must have found something inside to warrant the dogs to be summoned.”

He added: “Two men from the Wolverhampton area were arrested on suspicion of drugs offences and they are continuing to assist us with our investigation.”

One resident of Morfe Road, who did not wish to be identified, said: “I was returning from shopping when I heard the commotion.

“The vehicles came from the direction of Bridgnorth Health Club in The Mall before the officers forced the van to pull over.”

She added: “The police must have called for support because another vehicle containing more officers soon arrived.

“They were looking all over the van before the dogs arrived.”

A shopper at the nearby Co-op store said: “It is not something you expect in this area.

“It is a quiet street and it was like something off a television cop show.”
