Letter: The loss of democracy

Monday 19th October 2009, 9:40AM BST.

letter-letter-writer-writing-message1LETTER: You report that few people turned up at the meeting of the Albrighton local joint committee of Shropshire Council. Could the reason be that such committees are powerless talking shops, set up in vain attempt to cover up our loss of actual power with the scrapping of district councils, with the little funds given to committees being in the nature of bribes with the same objective?

As usual Margaret Thatcher’s analysis was right. She said: “We’ve got too much government, keep the parish and district levels that are close to the electorate, scrap the county and regional levels that are remote and expensive.”

If we need a new game for our Christmas parties we could play picking the biggest disasters inflicted on us by the Labour government (frequently abetted as in this case by Lib-Dems). Our choice would be wide, but the shifting of power to Shirehall must be high in the rankings.

    I agree with David Lake.

The problem is that when some people can find difficulty in working up an interest in what is happening on the other side of their own town or village, how or why would a County Councillor on the Cheshire border have much interest in a ward that has a Wolverhampton dialing code or the ‘wrong postcode’?

In small sections of Shropshire the first language is Welsh. Not something a councillor whose nearest large town is Wolverhampton would be aware of. And why should they be?

You have not seen anything yet.
When Blair becomes all powerful President of Europe, Cameron, Brown or Clegg will be in the same position as the Albrighton joint committee.
Our general elections as we know them now will become meaningless.
Unfortunately it will still mean just as many MP’s all being paid for what?

“In small sections of Shropshire the first language is Welsh” …..Behave yourself….and how many in that community are fluent in welsh and talk to anyone outside that community in welsh? none they seek out another prson who lives around the corner who more than likely was not born in wales and learned welsh as a hobbie akin to train spotting and have a chit chat in welsh with them like some people go and have a game of footy or golf on a saturday.

I agree to some extent with the writer. Local democracy is important but the level must be right. Parish level is too small. Parish councillors too parochial. We need a wholescale reform of local government in England. Local authority areas should be functional for example, why lump Shifnal, Much Wenlock and Broseley in with the remote Shropshire Council. Surely the issues that they face are more in common with those of Telford? Those towns function as satellites and should be administrated as a functioanl area. I don’t think County level is important. They are not big enough to deal with significant problems such as transport links and I would suggest elected regional governance is the best way. That way there would be critical mass and enough budget to achieve benefits but would be far more democratic locally than a parliament just for the whole of England for example where the South East bias would just be perpetuated.
