Health staff get swine flu jabs

Monday 19th October 2009, 12:46PM BST.

needleFrontline health workers across Shropshire were today being given swine flu jabs as the number of patients with symptoms continues to rise.

Numbers of people attending GPs with flu-like symptoms across Shropshire and the West Midlands region remain above the average for England.

Shropshire’s health trusts have comprehensive vaccination plans which are already in place. The swine flu vaccine will be prioritised initially to front line staff and those most at risk of developing severe illness.

Dr Chris Weiner, public health consultant at NHS Telford & Wrekin, gave an assurance today that the vaccine is safe.

“I know people will be concerned about its safety,” he said. “I am completely assured and reassured that immunisation is safe.

“The vaccine has not been rushed through. It has been built upon tried and trusted techniques.”

Dr Weiner said the number of cases was steadily increasing, though there had not been a big surge in numbers.

Across the West Midlands the number of deaths where there has been a positive test of swine flu is 11.

All schools in Shropshire have been provided with swine flu information.

Dr Rashmi Shukla, regional director of public health, said: “For most people swine flu is not a serious illness and they should start to feel better after a few days without needing to go to their GP or A&E.

“However, for some people, including those with other serious medical conditions, it may be a more serious when a virus like this is circulating. If you have flu-like symptoms and you have long-term health problems then it is important that you talk to your doctor.”

I hope the vaccines are refused. There is no logical reason for taking a vaccine that has unanswered questions about it’s safety. I will never accept a swine flu vaccine.

Nope, me neither. Rushed out on a wave of media hysteria and barely tested within a responsible timeframe. I’m suspicious about how and where this disease has mutated from anyway, there’s something wrong here that doesn’t add up. I’ll take my chances..thanks.

As usual we see the same ill-informed comments about vaccines. The same sort of hysterical nonsense that led to people not taking up the MMR jab and kids dying of measles as a result.

The new flu vaccine is very similar to numerous previous flu vaccines – it simply contains a different variant of the flu virus. Otherwise the delivery container (made from eggs I believe)is the same as previous vaccines which have been delivered to millions of people.

As for being ‘suspicious about where the disease has mitated from’ you really need to look at the history of influenza epidemics. These things occur naturally, and transition naturally from a variety of animals, including pigs and birds.

We have the means to protect ourselves, and the responsbility to protect those most at risk – only your own paranoia is preventing you from doing so. I’ll be going for my jab as soon as it’s offered.

The first two comments here are not hysterical but cautious. It is the media coverage that has been hysterical. Peter, you are not cautious and wish to be a guinea pig, so go ahead and take the vaccine and be sure to keep us posted on your reaction to it.

    Wayne,

I’ve had a number of flu jabs over the years. The vaccine changes every year as different strains come and go. I’ve never had any adverse response whatsoever, and I don’t anticipate one this year either – there is nothing fundamentally different about this vaccine than any of the others.

In fact, for most people, the swine flu is a relatively minor illness. It is, however, easily spread, so the vulnerable groups of people who might be at significant risk from it, are the people we need to protect.

If people in professions who are being offered this are refusing to take it on the basis of tabloid nonsense, then they are putting these groups at unnecessary risk. There’s a difference between caution and denial.

stuff and nonsense you get far more dangerous e numbers in tinned foods and colourings than you will ever get in a vaccine which has to go through many trials before it is issued to the public.

Why not bother to go to ‘www.nvic.com’ thats the USA’s ‘National Vaccine Information Center’. Lots of good information to be had there and lots of pertinent questions asked.
