Shrewsbury Town were today continuing the urgent search for reinforcements after their desperate injury problems took a fresh turn for the worse.

Saturday’s miserable 2-1 defeat at the Football League’s bottom club Darlington was compounded by yet more bad news from the treatment room – with their two first choice strikers now sidelined.

On-song Dave Hibbert missed the trip to the north east, while Jake Robinson lasted a little over 30 minutes before being withdrawn.

“Dave Hibbert has got a problem with his Achilles tendon,” said manager Paul Simpson.

“We are hopeful he will be fit for next weekend. It’s a problem because he has been on fire for us but we just have to deal with it.

“Jake has turned his ankle and it was very badly swollen on Saturday. He was on crutches and we will just have to see how it settles down.”

The duo join long-term injury victims Omer Riza, Terry Dunfield, Craig Disley, Mike Jackson and Glyn Garner on the sidelines, while goalkeeper Chris Neal continues to feel his way back from a groin problem.

And Simpson concedes the need to bring in fresh blood is increasing with tomorrow’s rearranged Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie at Accrington Stanley followed by a home League Two clash with Aldershot on Saturday.

“We have been trying to get players in and we will see what comes this week,” he added.

“We just have to keep persevering and see if we get the okay for one of these players we have enquired about.”

Simpson admitted his side were well below par at Darlington.

“It was a bitterly disappointing performance and the way we went about it wasn’t the type of performance that has got us results of late,” he added.

“We got ourselves into a good position with the early goal and then suddenly decided we wanted to try and be clever with tippy-tappy football when the way to win was to get them turned and get willing runners in behind.

“We spoke about not giving Darlington a lift.

“Unfortunately we did and we have allowed them to get their first win of the season which should never have been the case.”
