Three dead in road crashes

Saturday 17th October 2009, 10:50AM BST.

Three men have died and 11 people were injured in a night of chaos on the region’s roads.

A man died and five people – including three children – were injured in a crash near Bridgnorth and two men were killed when their cars collided on the south Shropshire border

The first accident, on the A442 at Shatterford, near Bridgnorth, happened at 7pm and involved a silver Vauxhall Zafira, being driven by a man in his 40s, with his three daughters as passengers, and a black Honda Coupe.

The driver of the Honda, a 23-year-old from Wolverley, Worcestershire, was confirmed dead at the scene and his passenger, a man in his 20s, suffered head injuries.

Ambulance service spoke- swoman Claire Thomas said the passenger was taken to Worcester Royal Hospital.

Ambulance crews said the driver of the other car and his daughters, aged between eight and 12, were treated at the scene and taken to the same hospital as a precaution for minor seat belt and whiplash injuries and shock.

Miss Thomas said the fa mily was “very lucky” not to suffer more serious injuries.

Tom Symonds, of the Ro ad Policing Unit at Rubery, said: “It is vital we establish what happened on Friday. I am keen to hear from anyone who recalls seeing any of the vehicles in the area at the time of the collision, even the smallest detail can be vital.”

The second collision inv olved a blue Nissan Almera and a blue Mercedes E300 on the A4110 at Wigmore, near Ludlow, at 7.25pm.

Inspector Gurjit Singh, of West Mercia Police, said: “The vehicles were travelling in opposite directions and collided.

“Both drivers, who were men, were pronounced dead at the scene after suffering serious multiple injuries.”

A five-vehicle collision in Shrewsbury saw three people taken to hospital, including a 17-year-old man with serious injuries.

The crash happened in Belle Vue Road shortly after 4pm yesterday and involved two cars and two motorcycles.

And three people had to be released from a vehicle by firefighters after their car crashed at Llanfechain at 4.35am today.

A Mid and West Wales Fire Service spokesman said the car was the only vehicle involved and three people had been trapped.
