Protesters at stadium over plans for hospital

Saturday 17th October 2009, 10:49AM BST.

Protesters were expected to turn out at AFC Telford United’s New Bucks Head stadium today to show the red card to proposals to downgrade the Princess Royal Hospital.

A rally was organised at the football club to protest against the controversial plans, which would see accident & emergency and paediatric services downscaled and moved to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Party leaders on Telford & Wrekin Council backed the protest and said they hoped it would sway the minds of decision makers as a crunch meeting looms at the end of the month.

The board of Telford & Wrekin PCT is to meet on October 27, when a decision will be made to go ahead with the proposals or defer for further consultation.

Telford & Wrekin Council leader, Councillor Andrew Eade, said: “This rally is about local people wanting to show their opposition to the proposals to remove services from the Princess Royal Hospital.

“The community and the council is united in its opposition to the effective downgrading of our hospital.”

Bosses at AFC Telford hoped to net a few extra fans from the rally and offered a discount on admission for protesters to get into the game against Southport.

Meanwhile Wrekin MP Mark Pritchard is putting the final touches to his Save the PRH campaign and has urged patients, hospital staff and residents to return any outstanding petitions to him by Tuesday.

The petitions can be sent to his office at 25 Church Street, Wellington, or direct to the House of Commons by October 20.

The petition – already approaching 15,000 names – will then receive a final count before Mr Pritchard submits it to Parliament .

I was at the ‘protest’. It was a complete disgrace with Andrew Eade turning it into a party political rally. I will be complaining on Monday about my council tax being used to have a massive PR department playing party politics

Why aren’t you advertising David Wright’s petition? Anyone would think the Shropshire Star is a biased paper

Pritchard talks a good talk, but he can’t even be bothered to attend this event. Yet again the star does not print the fact that the MP for Telford. David Wright was there! The star either lacks detail or has an agenda of keeping things out of their stories!

Or why not publicise the completely non-party-political e-petition to Downing Street at http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/Save-the-PRH/ ?

Or the completely non-party-political facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=283798875156 – rapidly closing in on 4000 members?

This is a simple issue for politicians. There is going to be movement of services at some point so do they back Telford or Shrewsbury? There is no point pussy footing around like Kath is. It’s make your mind up time – Telford or Shrewsbury! At least David Wright is standing up for Telford for once!

Kath is not pussy footing around, at least she has done something and was actually the first to set up any petition and group.

    Well done Kath

Has to be Telford. The population of telford is far greater than that of Shrewsbury plus Telford is a growing city however Shrewsbury is a small market town.
