Officers will rule on move by Tesco

Saturday 17th October 2009, 10:47AM BST.

Supermarket giant Tesco’s bid to change how much floor space it can use for non-grocery products, which saw it rapped for breaking rules at its Shrewsbury superstore, will not go before councillors.

The move has sparked concern from people who believe there have been enough complaints for it to go before a committee.

Earlier this year a residents’ group claimed the breach at the Tesco Extra store in Battlefield Road had dealt a blow to town businesses already struggling.

The store admitted breaking rules on how much space it could use for non-grocery products and had to apply to vary a condition of its planning permission.

The variation would allow it to stock 152 sq metres more “comparison goods” – including clothing and household – at the store.

Earlier this year Dr Alan Shrank, a planning representative for Shrewsbury Town Centre Residents Association, raised concerns about the impact the breach was having on businesses in the town centre.

Today he said: “It does read as if the officer’s recommendation is likely to be a refusal rather than an approval.”

Gareth Proffitt, communications officer at Shropshire Council, said: “We anticipate that a decision on this application will be made by planning officers using delegated powers, rather than by the council’s regulatory committee.”
