Smith: We’re on the up

Manager Rob Smith has insisted his AFC Telford United team are “getting better all the time” as they prepare to welcome high-flying Southport to the New Bucks Head tomorrow.
Smith has seen some encouraging signs of progress in the performance of his side over the last fortnight.
And that gives him heart as a vital Blue Square North battle awaits against the second placed team.
“The big thing for me is that the performances are getting better all the team,” he said.
“In the first half of the last three games we have played some decent football – particularly at Worcester on Monday – and the challenge now is to try and extend that to as much as we can of the full 90 minutes.
“It’s a big game tomorrow because the gap between the two teams could be three points if we win and nine if they win.
“We have played Southport a lot over the last few seasons and the two teams know each other well.
“They are always competitive, honest battles and I’m expecting more of the same tomorrow.”
Smith’s big injury concern surrounds midfielder Carl Rodgers who suffered tendon damage in his foot in Monday’s FA Cup victory at Worcester.
He will be given every chance to prove his fitness.
“Carl has had an x-ray which showed no break which is good news,” said Smith. “He is very touch and go but is desperate to play. It’s a bit sore and we will give it right up until kick-off before we make a decision.
“If not, we have got the ideal replacement in Gavin Hurren. He can fit in at centre half, centre midfield or full back.”
Smith must also decide whether to hand recent recruit Steve Thompson a first start.
