Raiders rip cash machine from wall

Friday 16th October 2009, 11:13AM BST.

police_carRaiders used a mini-digger to rip a cash machine from the wall at a shop near Market Drayton today.

The attack on the Co-op shop at Loggerheads has forced it to close its doors while structural engineers assess the damage, police have said.

The mini-digger was this morning sealed off by the entrance to the shop and wreckage from the cash machine and front door were visible beside it.

Two car parks off Eccleshall Road in the village were cordoned off this morning by detectives from Staffordshire Police hunting for clues.

Police have not confirmed whether any money was stolen in the incident, which happened at about 2am.

Police were called to the scene following a report the front of the shop had been attacked.

An investigation is now under way to determine the circumstances of what happened.

Officers will also be gathering CCTV footage from the area and speaking to potential witnesses in a bid to snare the culprits.

Faye Casey, police spokeswoman, said: “It is believed a number of offenders were involved in the incident.

“The building has now been deemed unsafe and structural engineers will be attending the location.

“Anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact Newcastle-under-Lyme CID on 0300 1234455 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.”
