Final opinion split over Quantum Leap
Friday 16th October 2009, 11:35AM BST.

A total of 2,275 people had their say in the poll, with a number making written comments both praising and criticising the sculpture, created to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of the naturalist.
And the final results show that a narrow majority of just over 53 per cent believe the sculpture, in Mardol Quay Gardens, is a waste of taxpayers’ money, compared to those who believe it is worth the cash.
According to the final results more people say the Charles Darwin artwork is not good value for money with 46.7 per cent people saying it is worth the cash.
The sculpture has come under criticism after Shropshire Council agreed to increase the anticipated final budget for the project by £100,000 to £450,000, however, it has also won a number of people over, leading to the close results.
One person wrote: “There needs to be a public inquiry into how councillors spend public money.”
Another added: “I think this sculpture is a sheer waste of taxpayers’ money – it is one of the ugliest things I have ever seen.”
But others have previously voiced support for the artwork, which was dedicated by Darwin’s great, great-grandson Randal Keynes earlier this month, who said he believed it had the power to change minds like Darwin himself.
Council business development manager Dominic Wallis has said he believed many would change their minds when they saw it with its associated geo garden.

I just cannot believe that something so small could cost so much.
When they announced the price I was expecting it to be perhaps 30′ high, that structure could have been made at a tenth of the cost in steel and then sprayed with a render to have exactly the same effect,in a tenth of the time.
I have a feeling the councillors that approved this were taken in by a simple smoke and mirrors trick, how could the public trust such vast sums of money with them?

As far as I’m aware, it doesn’t make a noise so the Town Centre Old Residents Association should be happy.

Hideous & a waste of money

This monstrosity will always represent an insult to hard-pressed tax payers who will have to bankroll the council’s stupidity. Nearly half a million quid of OUR money down the drain. Next they’ll have their hands out for more Council Tax.

Should your headline not be “shropshire Star split over the result of their own poll”
I’ve just checked the shropshire star’s previous article.
It says, with the poll closed the reuslts were 53% thought the sculpture was worth the money – 47% didn’t.
Take a look for yourseleves.

I quite like it, though I do accept it’s cost an obscene amount of money to construct. However, I can’t help wondering what it will look like in the future when a combination of weathering, vandalism and the attentions of drunks have all taken their toll.
