The burning hay barn at Woodhouse Farm, Redhill
Fire ripped through a barn at a Shropshire farm and destroyed £50,000 of hay, leaving more than 200 horses with nothing to eat.
Firefighters were called to Woodhouse Farm in Redhill, Telford, at 9.30am today.
No-one was injured but the 20 firefighters were expected to be at the farm for the next 48 hours to make sure the blaze does not spread.
Stacey Hancock, whose father John owns the farm, discovered the barn was on fire after popping in when she had dropped her children off at school. She said: “I was just walking past and I thought ‘the barn is on fire’.
“I started screaming ‘fire, fire’ and we tried to put it out ourselves using water and a fire extinguisher, but it quickly spread and it was no good. Its caused a lot of damage but we are just thankful that no-one got hurt.”
Crews from Telford, Tweedale and Shrewsbury attended the scene.
Incident Commander Pete Hawkins, from Telford fire station, said investigators were trying to find out the cause of the blaze.
He said: “The plan is to let the product burn and protect the surrounding areas and property.”
Marney Hancock, liveries manager at the farm, said the main concern was for the 200 horses, some of which are owned by other people, and making sure they were fed.
She said the bales of hay, worth about £50,000, had only been delivered and put in place yesterday.
