Fan bid to get Tigers back on ice

Thursday 15th October 2009, 11:25AM BST.

tigers_logo1Telford Tigers could be set to roar again – with discussions under way to set up a fans’ trust to run the troubled club and get it back on the ice.

The outfit pulled out of ice hockey’s English Premier League at the end of last season after attempts to secure new backing failed following the decision by owners David and Rachel Candlin to step down.

But long-time fan Mike Dixon has organised an open meeting next month with the hope of setting up a fans’ trust to run the club.

Mr Dixon and Andy Phillips, the club’s long-serving equipment manager, have spent the summer researching supporters’ trusts and attending meetings with key bodies and interested parties to establish whether a club run by a fan committee was viable.

Mr Dixon said: “We believe a fans’ trust is our best hope of getting the Tigers EPL team back on to the ice in 2010. There has always been a loyal fanbase behind the Tigers, and it would be fabulous to see the team owned and managed by its followers.”

The meeting will be held on November 3 at Telford Ice Rink, starting at 7.30pm.

It will include a presentation by Supporters Direct, the organisation that provides advice and guidance to more than 150 supporter trusts including ShrewsTRUST and AFC Telford United. Mr Phillips, said: “It is vital that everyone with an interest in the Telford Tigers comes along to the meeting.”
