Familiar face back as Drayton manager

Thursday 15th October 2009, 12:47PM BST.

Lee RobertsMarket Drayton Town today moved to fill their managerial vacancy – by bringing former boss Lee Roberts back to the club, writes CHRIS HUDSON.

Roberts takes over from Simon Line, who quit Greenfields last week to take up the hotseat at Zamaretto League club Hednesford Town.

He was previously in charge of the club for two years up until standing down to make way for Line back in 2005.

And he admitted he was shocked when chairman Alex Mutch approached him to return and steady the ship in the UniBond League.

“They approached me, which makes it even better for me, because it’s good for the old ego,” said Roberts, who is also the caretaker at Longslow Road Infants School in Drayton.

“When I left they were still in the West Midlands League and they’re now just two off the Conference.

“The standard will be a lot better than I remember and I’ve had a couple of sleepless nights thinking about it. It’s a big challenge for me, but I’m ready for it.”

Mutch believes he has the right man to bring stability back to the club, following two 4-0 defeats since Line’s departure.

“He established the club following the breakdown of Little Drayton Rangers – he put the club back on the map and we’re delighted to have him back,” said Mutch.

Mick Murphy and Steve McCormick will remain as part of the coaching team.
