Discussion over traffic lights
Thursday 15th October 2009, 9:03AM BST.
Plans to build 20 houses in Shrewsbury are to be reconsidered today following a wrangle over how much cash should be paid towards new traffic lights on a road in the area.
The proposal to build the homes, which include 10 affordable units, on land at Corporation Lane, was approved by the former Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council last year.
Councillors gave the go ahead to the scheme despite more than 100 letters of objection and concerns from officers that the development would be “significantly detrimental” to the landscape.
Members argued that there was a need for more affordable housing.
However, the developer says a condition for up to £150,000 to be paid towards the installation of traffic lights on Berwick Road/Ellesmere Road, is unfair.
Discussions have taken place between the developer and Shropshire Council highway officers to take account of the size of the development with a recommended contribution of £93,750 now proposed.
The application will be discussed by members of the council’s area regulatory committee (central) at the Shirehall.
A report to councillors says the developer had originally applied to build 32 homes at the site but this had been withdrawn before the new plans were devised.
Officers are recommending that the contribution to the traffic lights be reduced to the lower amount and that the money is paid in three installments.

Quite right too. Though I fear for the future of the Berwick area in general when the futile N*r** W**t ‘relief’ road arrives to blight this beautiful part of the countryside for eternity. Can we not repatriate all brummies in Shropshire and get our county back?
