‘Vision’ plan for town is called in
Wednesday 14th October 2009, 11:42AM BST.
A decision to spend up to £120,000 on a vision for the future of a Shropshire town has been called in amid major concerns a large chunk of cash will be used to pay for consultants.
Councillor Alan Mosley fears most of the cash, approved by Shropshire Council’s cabinet, will be used to pay for outside consultants to draw up a vision for Shrewsbury.
And he is concerned it will lead to the creation of a document that will just sit on a shelf at an office at Shirehall.
Today Councillor Mosley revealed he has called in a decision approved by the authority’s cabinet last month to “commission a regeneration framework for Shrewsbury to be funded via the Growth Point budget up to a maximum of £120,000″.
Councillor Mosley called it in, in his role as chairman of Shropshire Council’s development services scrutiny panel, which will now have another look at the decision.
He said: “I’ve called in the decision because I don’t think enough attention has been made to work that has already been done to identify this so-called vision.
“Throwing large amounts of money at consultants has not in the past proved very beneficial.
“I feel this could be wasting large amounts of money on something that may be unnecessary and not have any clear objectives and outcomes.”
Richard Lawrence, head of Shrewsbury Growth Point at Shropshire Council, said a lot of the work would be done in-house and there could be up to four pieces of external work from consultants.
