Firefighters battle school blaze

Wednesday 14th October 2009, 9:39PM BST.

Almost 30 firefighters were called to tackle a fire at a Shropshire school which badly damaged a number of classrooms.

Firefighters said only prompt action by crews stopped a large building on the campus of the Marches School in Morda Road, Oswestry, from being completely destroyed in yesterday’s blaze.

Crews from all over Shropshire and North Wales battled for 25 minutes after being called to the school at 6.45pm.

An investigation has been launched into the cause of the blaze which is not believed to be suspicious at this time.

Sarah Longville, head teacher of the school, said children in years seven, eight and nine were being told to stay at home on Thursday while years 10 and 11 should attend as normal.
