Council’s pledge on tax rises

Wednesday 14th October 2009, 3:00PM BST.

council-taxShropshire householders will face council tax rises of no more than 3.5 per cent next year, Shirehall bosses pledged today as they revealed cautious spending plans.

Those facing the biggest hike — the full 3.5 per cent — are likely to be residents of Bridgnorth under Shropshire Council’s plans to equalise tax demands countywide from 2012.

For some residents in other parts of the county there will be no rise.

Shropshire Council is looking to make savings of £7.1 million to fulfill its tax promise but also to help it start preparing for a Government funding squeeze next year.

The final budget will not be approved until early next year.

We should ‘nt being having any rise at all though should we, if they did’nt waste money on bits of stone by the river then it would be ok!

Prepare for the mother of all spending squeezes after next year. In fact I would imagine the council – if they have any sense – are already planning for a massive cut in revenue support from the Government, so the worst is yet to come.

Its a bitter pill for residents in the former Bridgnorth District Council area, who had previously enjoyed lower council tax rises than some authorities. Of course, all that has ended under Shropshire Council, whose motto is – somewhat perplexingly – “better for everyone”.

Oh no it isn’t! And we’ll be continuing to that in *spades* over the next few years…..

Now there was I believing that going to one Unitary Council was going to save us all money – so there shouldn’t be any increase at all, indeed maybe we should even be getting a reduction. Were we all sold a pup or what?!

Whilst all other businesses have to maintain or even reduce prices (except energy of course) – What does council tax do ? Goes up AGAIN, like it has done EVERY YEAR since it was introduced.

It should be going DOWN, not up.

Didn’t they say Unitary would SAVE money and there would not be any rises for something like 3 years???? And has anyone managed to get to speak to the person they wanted? I keep getting ‘customer services’ who are very pleasant but don’t know the answers. Instead of putting me through I then have to hold on while they speak to the relevant person and then come back to me – while I pay for the call – what marvelous progress!!

    this is a joke

what a rip off why should people in areas be punished for the over spending councils like south shropshire district, this is unfair, all tax should be cut to the level of the cheapest area (bridgnorth) not risen to the highest

in the middle of a recession, inflation in negative, house prices falling, jobs going, private sector pensions closing and they stick 3.5% on us so they can fund high salaries and non jobs, this is a disgrace, i am tempted to withold payment in protest

Spookily those former district areas that were pro Unitary get nil/lowest increase, those that were against get the most and Bridgnorth – the most opposed get the largest increase of all – coincidence or am I being cynical?

So the much vaunted Unitary Council is nothing of the sort after all. Different increases in council tax across the county suggests that, in reality, the old District councils still exist and are as wasteful as ever. Council tax is evil, it rises relentlessly year on year with no regard for people’s ability to pay. My vote goes to the political party who has the courage to abolish it now!
