Blow for road safety campaigners
Wednesday 14th October 2009, 12:01PM BST.
People living on a busy trunk road on the Shropshire and Powys border have been told there is not enough evidence to carry out the safety improvements they want.
The A483, from the Maesbury Road Junction in Oswestry, through the Llynclys crossroads to Pant, came under scrutiny of the St Oswald and Llanymynech Local Joint Committee yesterday.
Campaigners want a pedestrian crossing in Pant for children to be able to walk to school safely as part of the Shropshire Council Safer Routes to School scheme.
They also want a roundabout at Llynclys crossroads and improvements at the Maesbury Road Junction.
But Saqib Mir, the Highways Agency route performance manager for the West Midlands area, said it had to prioritise schemes.
He said survey found the number of people crossing in Pant is fairly low and there were not enough collisions to support the need for a crossing. A 30mph limit was introduced a couple of years ago.
Martin Withington, Shr- opshire Council’s head of transportations, said the council was not responsible for trunk roads.
But residents hit back claiming people don’t cross the roads, but drive everywhere because it’s safer.
Mr Mir said the agency’s data showed in 2008 there were eight slight accidents and no fatal or serious accidents along the A483, while in 2007 a review recommended no change to the speed limit.
He added, however, that it would continue to review the A483 and its junctions and would possibly speak with local people when they come back to do a study. He also vowed to investigate concerns at the Maesbury Road Junction.
