A bronze bust of Britain’s first celebrity gardener Percy Thrower which was damaged in Shrewsbury’s Quarry, is to be repaired with added measures to protect it from vandals, it was announced today.

The statue was vandalised along with another of a mermaid and dozens of flowers were also pulled up during the spree last week, which caused hundreds of pounds worth of damage.

But Shrewsbury Town Council officials today said they will pay for the £400 worth of repairs to the bust which will be restored and placed on a longer and more secure plinth to protect it.

Gary Farmer, operations manager for the authority, said he had had discussions with the Thrower family, adding: “The town council will be paying for that and I know one of my colleagues has been in touch with a stonemason and we may have to create a larger plinth for the head to sit on so it’s more secure.

“It’s been hit twice before by vandals so this will be a stronger structure. I would have thought the work will be done in the next two to three weeks.”

A “substantial reward” has also been offered by Daniel Kawczynski, MP for Shrewsbury and Atcham, for information leading to the prosecution of vandals who damaged the bronze bust. Anybody with information should call the police on 0300 3333000.

Why dont they spend taxpayers money on tracking down and prosecuting the scum that did this? I’m sure the young local troublemakers are already known to police, its time these were made an example. A few public floggings would soon cut down the crime rate. Incidentally, a couple of CCTV cameras wouldnt go astray or is this what they mean by added measures?
