Talks on indoor market revamp

Tuesday 13th October 2009, 11:02AM BST.

powis-hall-topOswestry Town Council officials were in London today for “vital” talks on a makeover for the town’s indoor market.

The council says it needs more detail about how the town centre building would be changed in the proposals from interior design experts Mydeco.

This year the Powis Hall market scooped first prize in a competition in The Times to give a public building a makeover involving top designers Sir Terence Conran and Tara Bernerd.

Promoters Mydeco pledged £50,000 for the makeover which the town council, that runs the indoor market, has agreed to match. But the designers say about £200,000 is needed to transform the 1960s building.

Council officers are travelling to the capital for talks with the competition organisers.

Councillor Margaret Chamberlain, Oswestry’s mayor, said: “This is a vitally important meeting.”

I’m sure that Oswestry Town Council had nothing to do with this project until the Powis Hall ‘scooped first prize’. Funny how they want to be part of it when it’s national news.

To be fair, they’ve match funded it so far and it’s a sizable project so more funding needs to be sourced, allocated and committed before the clock runs out. It is a concern that this is suddenly so urgent and “vital” four months after the Mydeco win. This should have been nailed three months ago and a scheme proposed and ready to roll by now. Fine words and no visible commitment have long been the hallmark of council attitude to the market. It’s an 800 yr old institution and defines Oswestry, as those expensive signs out on the by-pass proclaim…… “Oswestry – Historic Border Market Town”.

Surely the £80k they are proposing to spend on New Street would be better spent on the Powis Hall development?

I believe it is £110,000 to be spent on New Street. Which is Shropshire Council money and nothing to do with the Town Council.
