Lights ‘making town traffic worse’

Tuesday 13th October 2009, 10:55AM BST.

newtownRoad congestion in Newtown is being made worse because traffic lights in the town are not synchronised, a resident has claimed.

Philip Glynn said problems would only get worse unless something was done.

He said highways bosses needed to be doing everything in their power to upgrade the traffic lights system along the A483 in a bid to reduce the congestion.

“Newtown is the main archway into Mid Wales and the town is in desperate need of a bypass. But until we get one we have to try and make the best of what we’ve got,” he said.

“At the moment traffic lights along New Road don’t work together and I think they need to be upgraded before we add yet another set with the new Tesco development.

“I’m all for the supermarket coming to the town but think that highways officials need to start doing more to clamp down on the Newtown’s traffic congestion.

“The lights need to be upgraded and start working together to make the traffic flow through the town a lot smoother. If this doesn’t happen the town’s problem will only get worse.”

Residents have been calling for a Newtown bypass for more than half a century. Six options to reduce congestion and improve safety are currently being put forward by the Welsh Assembly for consultation, which will run until November 24.

Brochure and response forms have been sent out to residents and businesses.

A Welsh Assembly spokesman was unable to comment today.
