Jags draws Line under Bucks career
Tuesday 13th October 2009, 12:39PM BST.
AFC Telford United today completed a deal to extend the loan of Tamworth midfielder Gavin Hurren – but Steve Jagielka is leaving the club.
Hurren will remain at the New Bucks Head for a second month, though Telford have opted not to extend striker Stuart Nicholson’s stay.
And Jagielka, who was an unused substitute in last night’s 1-0 win at Worcester in an FA Cup replay, is to link up with former Market Drayton boss Simon Line at Hednesford.
The Telford chief is also waiting on news over another midfielder, with Jamie Vermiglio set to hold talks with Northwich later in the week.
“Jags wants some football so it looks like he’s going to Hednesford,” Smith revealed. “If it doesn’t work out he can always come back, we’ll keep our options open.
“We’ll have to wait and see what Jamie’s decision is over Northwich as well. Everyone seems to think I want him out, but my position has always been that he needs games – and he knows that himself.
“I want him back, but I can’t stop him going to Northwich if that’s what he decides.”
A first half header from Phil Trainer booked Telford’s spot in the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup, where they will face a trip to either Salford City or Blyth Spartans. Those two go head-to-head this evening.
The Bucks sparkled in the early stages at St George’s Lane last night and, despite having to withstand second half pressure from the hosts, Smith felt they deserved their victory.
“We’re getting criticised from all quarters by our fans at the moment and I think it’s really unjust,” he said.
“We’re not quite firing on all cylinders but we’re not as horrendous as people are making out.
“It was a massive result for us and it was a proper FA Cup tie.
“The first half hour was the best we’ve played all season and it mirrored when we came down here last time and played like that (in a 3-0 win), but then we got sloppy and we stopped making the right decisions.
“That continued in the second half and we didn’t defend well.
“We were hanging on a bit in the end but I think we deserved it over the two games.”
