County MPs get expenses letters

Tuesday 13th October 2009, 3:15PM BST.

parliament3Shropshire’s MPs came out fighting today as the Commons expenses scandal continued to deepen.

All five of the county’s MPs confirmed they had received letters from Sir Thomas Legg as part of the review into claims sparked by the summer’s expenses scandal.

Shrewsbury MP Daniel Kawczynski said he had been a clean bill of health.

The Tory MP said: “I am delighted that Sir Thomas Legg has found my expenses to be totally in the clear.”

He added: “Those MPs who have acted inappropriately should and must repay any monies.”

Telford MP David Wright has been asked to provide more details of his second home allowance claims, he confirmed today.

The Labour MP said: “I have not been asked to repay any money. I have just been asked to provide additional receipts and documents, so as far as I am concerned it is a clean bill of health.

“Clearly, I will provide the information and that will be the end of the matter.”

North Shropshire Conservative MP Owen Paterson has been told to repay £911.21.

The shadow Northern Ireland Secretary said: “I will look into the details and go back through the records and if I owe the money then obviously I will pay it back.”

Wrekin MP Mark Pritchard, who was elected as Tory MP in 2005, received a letter from Sir Thomas about a payment made to him in 2004.

He said: “I will now write to the Legg inquiry pointing out this error. I have not been asked to repay any other monies.”

Ludlow MP Philip Dunne said he had received a letter but it said that no action was required.

About 600 MPs have received letters containing the interim results of a review of their expenses.

good news everyone, looks like if you steal money & get caught, all you do is give it back then carry on life as normal.

    talk about double standards.

rich publicly robbing from the average person & the poor via political piggy bank (taxpayer)
    =
pay it back (only partly no doubt) nothing happens.

poor homeless bum steals a burger
    =
    gets arrested & prosecuted.
