Arrests made for disorder
Monday 12th October 2009, 2:44PM BST.

Rivals supporters hurled rocks at each another following Shrewsbury Town Football Club’s match against Port Vale resulting in police making a number of arrests for disorder.
The incident happened outside Shrewsbury’s Prostar Stadium on Saturday following the game which finished 1-0 to the away side.
Police said a small number of arrests were made during the day for public order offences.
Chief Inspector Martin Whitelegg, of West Mercia Police, today said: “A number of Shrewsbury Town supporters on the footpath threw rocks at Port Vale fans as they left the ground following the match.
“The away fans then retaliated by throwing the rocks back and there was a threat of large scale disorder breaking out. However, police officers separated the two groups from the ground before it could escalate.
“This is appalling behaviour and police will be taking the matter up with the relevant organisations.”

Why is your paper intent on bad-mouthing football supporters? these people were a handful of trouble-makers NOT Football supporters.
I would hardly call it “hurling rocks”, yes there were a few objects thrown but more like stones than rocks.
No wonder some people dont want a football club in the town when they read inaccurate stories like this

Award for the weakest argument of 2009 goes to ………………”Town fan”!
Can’t trouble makers be football fans and vice versa? “They were more like stones than rocks” – oh well that’s alright then.

Like Town Fan, I was wondering what the difference is between a stone and a rock? Or indeed a pebble for that matter?
Perhaps the Shropshire Star would have been wiser and more responsible to refer to these improvised weapons as geological projectiles?

Lucy W – If someone through a pebble at you and you could shake it off, if someone through a rock at you , you would be squashed ie Wile E Coyote in the roadrunner cartoons. I would suggest you try to get hit by pebbles and not rocks.
I hope this helps.

Town Fan said “Why is your paper intent on bad-mouthing football supporters?” but this was Shrewsbury so they couldn’t have been football supporters : )

Should the hooligan element be hit by stones, pebbles or rocks? Yes!

Football is a game that encourages violence and bad sportsmanship from the highest level.
Football is only game I can think of where you are actually allowed to cheat, which is made worse by the fact that its actively encouraged by management and players alike. If the sport were to become strict and have post match citings for diving and other incidents, which were than backed by stong penalties then maybe this discipline would filter down to supporters. Currently players are allowed to intimidate the referee and other players with no fear of penalty, if they were immediately sent off and banned for 6 months then maybe the game would become the beautiful game that it could be. Until then I will not watch or support it and I definitely will not let my children play or get involved!

I was at the match and the atmosphere was grim throughout. However, it is only a few that try to spoil it for the rest, an area with about 50 people at the away end and the home block nearest spent the whole time trying to antagonise each other, they are not watching the match most of the time so clearly not football fans but just looking for trouble. There were over 7000 people there mostly watching the football and enjoying the match!

well annie, those 50 from shrewsbury will more than likely be there for the next home game, you saw them, i assume stewards, cctv saw them yet no actions were taken, banning orders removed from the ground etc, therefore the club must shoulder some of the blame surely?
