Accused ‘has no memory of crash’

Monday 12th October 2009, 6:00PM BST.

Kirsty WilliamsA Telford teenager today told a court she could not remember anything about the day she crashed her car in an accident which left a college friend dead.

Kirsty Williams, of Baldwin Webb Avenue, Donnington, took to the witness stand today at Shrewsbury Crown Court.

The 19-year-old denies causing the death of Jonathan Humphreys, 17, of Baschurch, by dangerous driving in Huffley Lane, near Bomere Heath, on January 30 last year.

The prosecution alleges the accident in which Mr Humphreys, a passenger in Williams’ Vauxhall Corsa, died was caused by the vehicle speed into the bend, the steering, the under-inflation of the tyres or a combination of all three.

Williams had owned the Vauxhall Corsa she was driving just days and the jury has been told she took four friends from Walford College into Shrewsbury for lunch. It was on the return journey the accident took place.

Today she said: “I cannot remember nothing of the day, I don’t know why I cannot remember. All I remember is I had just come out of hospital and I was in a bodycast and I was in a wheelchair.”

Mr Francis Laird, prosecuting, asked Williams if she had checked the tyre pressures on the car and if she was aware that if a car was heavily laden the tyre pressures needed to be adjusted.

She said: “I was not a very experienced driver so it didn’t really cross my mind to be honest.”

The trial continues.
