Oswestry aerial shotOne of Oswestry’s shopping streets, criticised for its “diabolical” road surface is to get a £110,000 makeover.

New Street will get Yorkstone paving and kerbing laid along its length. And a new road layout will make the street, which connects Bailey Street and Willow Street, more pedestrian friendly.

Last year town councillors criticised New Street as having a diabolical road surface and called for the improvements to be brought forward.

The scheme is being carried out this winter by Shropshire Council and council officers will be in Oswestry town centre on Wednesday to answer any questions residents have on the project.

Work is expected to be completed by the end of March 2010.

The scheme proposals will be on display in the Wilkinson store in New Street on Wednesday when officers will be on hand to answer questions from 10am to 5pm.

Councillor Martin Taylor-Smith, Shropshire Council’s cabinet member for strategic planning and transport, said: “We hope people will come and ask our officers any questions they may have on these improvements.

“By making these enhancements, we hope to make the area easier for pedestrians and more attractive for the people who live, visit and work in Oswestry.”

Town councillor Martin Bennett last year called for works to brighten up the street, suggesting floral planters and a mural.

    let me have my say

    Its about time something was done along that section, maybe attention can also be made to the number of cars that park around there and going on through to the halifax to stop as well on sundays. (Central car park is free to park on sundays). Other wise there is a accident in the waiting to be had.

    It’ll be more than New Street that needs help if they choose a supermarket and retail complex as big as one of the four developments currently applied for and going through planning procedures at the moment. Take a look at what’s happening in Ellesmere since they welcomed Tesco into town. Tumbleweed Junction. Will they ever learn?
