Former Ultravox singer Midge Ure performed a “first class set” as he took to the stage in Shrewsbury to the delight of a near sell-out audience.

The ex-Thin Lizzy man, who was a major force behind the 1980s Band Aid campaign, performed a string of classics from his career and special songs performed by the likes of David Bowie and Fleetwood Mac which had inspired him, at last night’s gig.

Bosses of Theatre Severn said Midge, who celebrates his 56th birthday today, wowed the crowd as he performed his acoustic set.

The Scottish artist, who has received Ivor Novello, Grammy and BASCAP awards, performed about 20 songs including Ultravox’s big hit Vienna, Lady Stardust by Bowie, and Man of the World which was performed by Fleetwood Mac and written by Peter Green.

Jan Edmondson, who attended the gig and is marketing manager at Theatre Severn, said: “Midge did a set lasting at least an hour and a half. He was quite chatty between numbers and talked about the history of why he was playing what he was playing. The audience had a fantastic night. There was a buzz when they were coming out with people talking about how good he was.”
