Hot Town savour derby cauldron

Friday 9th October 2009, 11:35AM BST.

Paul Simpson2Paul Simpson expects Shrewsbury Town to thrive in a “derby” atmosphere as they bid to extend their League Two hot streak at home to Port Vale tomorrow.

Around 1,000 Vale fans are expected to make the short journey from the Potteries for the big clash.

The meeting between the two last season ended in controversy when Vale scored a last minute winner despite what looked a clear foul on then-Town keeper Luke Daniels.

But boss Simpson insists that will have no bearing this time around, preferring to focus on his team’s recent purple patch. “We have to treat it like a derby and it’s definitely a game to look forward to,” he said.

“Everyone gets a lift when you hear the away team is going to bring a good travelling support and it should make for a good atmosphere and a good game of football.

“What happened last year has no bearing – it’s not about revenge and the big thing for us is to keep going.

“We’re on a decent run of five wins, one draw and one defeat in the last seven and we want another three points.”

Vale boss Micky Adams attracted headlines for a recent outburst, when he publicly transfer-listed his entire squad.

Simpson admits it is not an approach he would adopt, but added: “He’s got the reaction he wanted because they’ve had some good results of late and they had a great win against Stockport (in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy) on Tuesday.”

Town are without the suspended Joss Labadie tomorrow, with either Lewis Neal or Steve Leslie expected to take his place in midfield.

Right-back Dean Holden has got a minor problem with his arm, though Simpson expects him to be fit.

l There have been changes to Shrewsbury’s youth structure, with Nigel Vaughan moving on from his position as head of youth development.

Vaughan’s assistant Steve Wheatley has also departed along with physio Rachel Greenley, with former Town defender David Hughes stepping in.

A club statement said: “David Hughes has been overseeing the youth structure and Community Trust Work and will continue in this position in until suitable replacements have been found.”
