Golf day fun to put cash in show fund pot

Friday 9th October 2009, 11:29AM BST.

Organisers of a golf day to be held in aid of the society which organises the West Mid Show today said they hoped the event would raise vital money for the group, which is facing a cash crisis.

The West Midlands Agricultural Society needs at least £50,000 to help it battle through the recession and the slow winter months.

And businesses are now rallying around to help the group, with a golf day announced this week.

The event will take place on October 19.

Society bosses recently vowed that the two-day show is not under threat and will continue despite the problems as they issued a rallying call to businesses and residents across the county to come forward and pledge their support to help the society.

They have set up a business board to drum up support and raise cash and, in the meantime, events are being organised to help the society.

The society will hold the golf day at Henlle Park in Oswestry and is calling on people from across the county to get involved.

Organisers say that as well as an enjoyable few hours of golf, guests will also be treated to a two-course dinner with coffee. At the society’s inaugural golf day in May, more than £1,000 was raised for the West Mid Show.

The cost for this month’s event, which has been proposed by the newly-formed business board, will be £140 per team of four, to include the two-course dinner.

The board is headed up by keen golfer Tony Randall, group director of Shrewsbury-based Heritage Glass.

He said: “We hope that as many people as possible will join us on what promises to be a most enjoyable day.”

The West Mid Show, held every June at the Berwick Road Showground in Shrewsbury, is staged to promote agriculture and the rural economy to the wider community and has been hailed a fun-filled and fascinating celebration of countryside life.

Next year’s 121st event will be held on June 26 and 27.
