Buzz is back as Bucks eye Cup of cheer

Rob SmithBoss Rob Smith believes the buzz is back at AFC Telford United ahead of tomorrow’s mouth-watering FA Cup clash with Worcester City.

Smith has been delighted by what he has seen from his squad in training, especially after the disappointment of being sunk by a last-minute goal against Blue Square North leaders Droylsden last week.

And he feels the arrival of new striker Steve Thompson, 20, from Port Vale has given the whole club a timely lift for the third qualifying round cup tie.

“We’ve had a great buzz at the last two training sessions,” said Smith. “I’ve been really pleased with how the lads have been after a bit of a kick in the teeth last week.

“A new face gives you buzz and he looks sharp as well – we’re trying to build a young, hungry squad and there’s a lot of talent in there.

“In the last couple of weeks I’ve seen signs that we’re improving as a squad.”

Smith is looking forward to going up against a Worcester side who are struggling in Blue Square South, but showed their potential with a shock victory over leaders Dover last week.

Former Bucks Alfie Carter and Marco Adaggio are both likely to be in Worcester’s match squad, adding extra spice to an already intriguing tie.

“It’s an attractive fixture between two of the biggest non-League clubs in the Midlands,” added Smith.

“It’s typical for us that they’ve hit a bit of form just as they’re about to play us. They had a cracking result against Dover and that’s going to make it a bit harder for us.”

Tamworth loan pair Gavin Hurren and Stuart Nicholson are cup-tied, but Telford’s two other loanees – Shane Killock and Sean Newton – are both eligible to play.

Smith also reported the luxury of a fully fit squad, adding: “It’s probably the first time since I’ve been here that we’ve got nobody in the treatment room.”

Jamie Vermiglio is likely to play for Chorley in their FA Cup clash at Northwich as he bids to reach full fitness. He notched his first goal for the Lancashire club in midweek.
