Rush-hour motorists faced hours of traffic misery after a lorry overturned on a Shropshire road.

The articulated lorry overturned on the A41/A525 roundabout at Whitchurch yesterday afternoon and ended up lying on its side across the road and a grass verge.

Traffic was forced to slow down to get past the vehicle, which was carrying a cargo of wood.

Claire Thomas, spokeswoman for the West Midlands Ambulance Service, said one man was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital following the incident at 2.50pm.

A West Mercia Police spokesman said the road was partially closed while the vehicle and its contents were recovered. He said: “It was causing problems for quite some time.”

Maria Hawkaluk, police spokeswoman, said today the road was partially reopened in stages after 7.30pm but that access restrictions remained in place until the scene was fully cleared later on.

Fire crews from Whitchurch and Prees attended, along with the rescue tender from Wellington and the incident commander from Shrewsbury.

Crew manager Graham Field, from Whitchurch fire station, said the lorry had crushed a lamppost.

He said: “It was coming from Shrewsbury going towards Chester. It was carrying wood. It was blocking the road partially.”
