Neal vows to be Town No 1
Wednesday 7th October 2009, 12:38PM BST.
Chris Neal is bracing himself a for a battle to regain the No 1 jersey at Shrewsbury Town after recovering from injury.
The goalkeeper, who turns 24 later this month, played the first five games for Town this season before suffering a hamstring problem which has kept him sidelined since the end of August.
He has now returned to full training and revealed he was due to play in last night’s Johnstone Paint Trophy trip to Accrington Stanley which was postponed 90 minutes before kick-off due to a waterlogged pitch.
But Neal is aware a battle to retain the first-team shirt awaits after the impressive performance of Steve Phillips since his loan arrival from Bristol Rovers.
“Last night was really frustrating but I’m just pleased to be back fit again,” said Neal.
“I was delighted to play the first five games but the injury came at the worst possible time because I just felt I was settling down well.
“There is a reserve game against Sheffield Wednesday next week so hopefully I can play in that and start getting some games under my belt.
“Steve has come in and done really well with his experience but there is nothing better than competition so hopefully I can provide that.”
Meanwhile, manager Paul Simpson has spoken of his disappointment at last night’s postponement- but admitted it was the correct decision.
“It’s frustrating for all of us and especially the lads who were going to play,” said the Town boss.
“We were only two minutes from the ground when we found out and I just hope the supporters who were travelling up hadn’t got too far.
No new date has been set for the rearranged tie, but the picture is a little clouded with Accrington Stanley due to face Blackburn in a friendly next Tuesday to raise much needed funds.
The postponement means midfielder Joss Labadie will serve his one match ban on Saturday when Port Vale are the visitors.
- Simpson will conduct a question and answer session arranged by the Official Supporters Club at the Prostar Stadium tomorrow (7.30pm).
