Jury told man doused in petrol and set ablaze
Wednesday 7th October 2009, 3:30PM BST.
A Shropshire pawnbroker was doused in petrol and kerosene and set on fire in his own home by two men, a court was told today on the first day of his murder trial.
George Black, 41, of Bucknell, in south Shropshire, attempted to put out the flames with water in his kitchen before fleeing up the stairs and trying to do the same thing in the bathroom.
Worcester Crown Court today heard that Mr Black then smashed windows to call for help from neighbours before being rushed to hospital.
But the court was told Mr Black suffered 40 per cent burns to his body and died as a result about 36 hours after the incident.
Robert Field, 22, and his friend Gareth Powell, 29, both of The Grove, Shobden, in Leominster, are accused of Mr Black’s murder. Both deny the charge.
