Travelling is not harming Town

SHREWSnewLogoTMTown’s impressive run in the league continued at the weekend with a hard-fought 1-1 draw away at Morecambe, writes Shrewsbury Town blogger James Pugh.

Town made it five games unbeaten on Saturday in a game which could have gone either way, and although we were far from our best a draw was the least we deserved.

In recent times Town have struggled to pick up points against sides from Lancashire, but considering the sort of form we are showing at the moment, travelling doesn’t seem to bother us and we could play anywhere and pick up points.

Dave Hibbert has understandably been picking up the plaudits this season with his goals, but a special mention needs to go to the on-loan youngster Joss Labadie. His energetic performances have been eye-catching in midfield and he has started to chip in with some vital goals recently.

Last season we were crying out for a box-to-box player to replace Dave Edwards, and it’s a shame that we may only have him until January. Simpson needs to do his best to keep him at least until the end of the season because he is a real star in the making.

He may have got a silly red card on Saturday, but as a young player he will learn from the experience and become a better player for it.

A mention should also go to Paul Murray who was a standout performer on Saturday and seems to be linking up with Labadie well.

Many fans must be surprised by Towns change in fortunes away from home this season, but as for the reasons behind it I am at lost to think why.

The only thing that I can think of is that we have had a bit more luck on our side, personnel have changed and we have learnt a lot of lessons from last season.

Town’s next two games sees them visit Accrington away in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy this evening followed by a local derby against Port Vale at home on Saturday.

A decent run in one of the cups this season would be a bonus, but without sounding too much like a manger, the league is obviously the priority.

Cup games will give youngsters and player like Lewis Neal returning from injury the chance to stake a claim for a regular first team spot, while others like Elder and Bright need games to get sharp and get some confidence in front of goal.

As for Saturday, we do not want to see a repeat of last year’s 2-1 defeat at home to Vale, who scored a last minute winner, provoking their fans to run wild. Our players can do everyone a favour and put the result of last year to bed and give them a little payback.

    Totally agreed James.

I would also like to add that Steve Phillips has helped the club with its current run as he adds passion.

We seem to have lacked a goalie with passion since the days of Paul Edwards.

A little concern is the form of Jake Simpson as he seems to be drifting in and out of the game and then to be replaced by Lewis Neal.

I feel Jake has come on leaps and bounds but lately his crossing and distribution has been poor.

Here is for a nice win at Stanley tonight.
