Town parking review pledge
Tuesday 6th October 2009, 2:03PM BST.
The number of parking spaces around Shrewsbury could be increased as part of a review of almost 90 sites around the town, which will also see some places reduced.
As well as creating spaces the review could lead to some spaces being taken out at 89 sites, depending on feedback from residents and Shrewsbury Town Council.
The scheme has been drawn up by Shropshire Council to assess the “appropriateness and safety” of the areas outside the river loop.
The aim of the plans is to consider issues identified by Shropshire Parking Service together with requests received from residents to address concerns about current parking restrictions.
The town council is being asked to provide its comments before an informal consultation with residents in the areas covered by the proposals is carried out.
Peter Bettis, chairman of Shrewsbury Business Chamber, said he would welcome a review.
He said: “It would be nice to think they’ll use joined up thinking and talk to residents, tourists and business people so that they understand the requirements of those groups.”
Kevin Aitken, team leader for traffic management and regulation at Shropshire Council, said the informal consultation in Shrewsbury was “95 per cent there” and they would wait to see what members of the town council said before they could consult with residents.
He said if everything went to schedule they would hope to start speaking to residents next month.
