Review: Stephen Jones, Wellington
Tuesday 6th October 2009, 11:14AM BST.
Professor Stephen Jones,
New College Hall,
Wellington
Humans have stopped evolving and we have reached our Utopia.
These were the claims of Professor Jones at the town’s 13th annual Literary Festival on Monday.
More than 150 people arrived at the King Street venue for the University College of London’s Genetics professor’s seminar on the topic of evolution.
But instead of giving a blow by blow account of the origins of man, Professor Jones instead looked to the future of humankind.
Genetics is not an easy subject to tackle in a one-evening presentation but he expertly made it understandable and entertaining.
With the use of images and jokes about politics he captivated and engaged the audience. Those attending the evening ranged from students to pensioners and there was an opportunity for questions at the end.
The controversial question of religion verses science of course raised its head but he answered it with his frank and honest opinion.
Taking into account the the fast ticket sales and huge round of applause at the end of the night, Professor Jones proved popular with the Wellington audience.
