National archery crown retained at county site
Tuesday 6th October 2009, 3:00PM BST.
Simon Terry followed up a World Cup silver medal with gold in the men’s recurve at the inaugural Archery National Series grand final – staged in Shropshire.
Terry edged out Larry Godfrey, who came fourth in the 2004 Athens Olympics, nine legs to five to keep the title in a high quality final at the home of British archery -
Lilleshall’s National Sports Centre.
Alan Wills took bronze after comprehensively beating London’s 2012 hopeful Tom Barber 8-0.
A new scoring system was used at the event, with the game decided over a series of fixed legs rather than a 12 arrow total.
Reflecting on the innovation Terry said: “It was a really good day and very different.
“With this system you’re not out of it after one bad arrow. It keeps things competitive.
“Obviously my silver last week was very special but this was a good feeling too and good competition practice.”
Charlotte Burgess took gold in the women’s recurve, steamrollering Naomi Folkard 8-2.
Swede Jenny Jeppsson, competing as a student at Edinburgh University beat Athens bronze-medalist Alison Williamson, from Shropshire, to finish third.
In the compound event Liam Grimwood took gold for the men, while 19-year-old Lucy O’Sullivan edged out Nicola Simpson in the women’s event.
