Work to start on town revamp
Monday 5th October 2009, 12:29PM BST.
The latest phase in a multi-million pound regeneration scheme begins in a Telford town today.
Work is beginning on an upgrade of the George Street car park in Dawley and is expected to take four weeks to complete.
The scheme is part of Telford & Wrekin Council’s Borough Towns Initiative to revitalise the historic heart of key town centres.
The car park will be closed while work is carried out but access to the rear of adjacent businesses in the High Street will be maintained during this time.
Councillor Eric Carter, cabinet member for regeneration, said: “We are committed to investing in schemes to boost the economy and vitality of the centre of Dawley and this work will take us one step closer to achieving exactly that.
“Following consultation with local traders, other major works will not start until the New Year to reduce any impact on business in the run up to Christmas.”
Dawley Magna councillor Helen Williams said the work signalled the beginning of the regeneration of the town centre.
“These are really exciting times for Dawley with the High Street work starting soon and plans for new small and medium retail units and residential areas all on the table,” she said.
The regeneration scheme includes a remodelling of the High Street and a major rebuilding project at the Phoenix School.
