Route shut after motorcyclist dies

Monday 5th October 2009, 1:08PM BST.

accident_signA motorcyclist died following a crash with a car which saw a Shropshire road closed for more than four hours. The Kawasaki motorbike collided with a Honda car near Bridgnorth.

Police are now appealing for any witnesses to the accident involving the green motorbike and a blue Honda CR-V car on the A442 at Quatford at about 4.45pm yesterday.

The rider of the motorcycle, a man believed to be in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

The occupants of the car were not injured but were left shaken after the incident.

Constable Tim Street, who is investigating the circumstances of the collision, said the area was busy at the time and a number of witnesses had already come forward.

“Although we have already spoken to some people who saw what happened, we believe that there will have been others who would have seen the crash or either vehicle immediately beforehand.

“If anybody has information which might help our investigation, we would urge them to contact the police,” he added.

The road was closed until after 9pm while police collision investigators worked at the scene and the vehicles involved were removed from the scene.

The motorcylist who died has not yet been formally identified.

The coroner for South Shropshire, Mr Anthony Sibcy, has been informed.

A post mortem examination and inquest will be opened in due course.

I have no knowledge of the circumstances of the reported tragic accident, but I do travel that road regularly, and note that there have been reductions in spped limit along almost its entire length to Kidderminster, presumably to curb the enthusiasm of the many irresponsible motorcyclists who seem to regard it as a race track.

I’ve seen no evidence that the new speed limits have slowed these characters down, so it appears to me that once again responsible drivers/riders are penalised for the actions of the few.

On a nearby road yesterday, (the road from Enville to Bridgnorth) I was passed by an idiot on a motorcycle, travelling at high speed, and passing a line of cars across a double unbroken white line. It beggars belief…
