Extra police for football match
Monday 5th October 2009, 6:00PM BST.
More than 100 police officers are expected to be on duty at this weekend’s clash between Shrewsbury Town and Port Vale following trouble which marred last season’s meetings between the sides.
West Mercia Police is working closely with both clubs ahead of Saturday’s match at the Prostar Stadium, which is expected to attract about 7,000 fans.
There were four arrests at the Prostar in October last year when Port Vale won the match 2-1 with a last-gasp winner. At the return fixture in January, six people, one a Port Vale fan, were arrested on suspicion of public order and criminal damage offences before the match in Stoke-on-Trent.
Officers also handed out 15 dispersal orders, all to Shrewsbury Town followers, in a bid to stop trouble.
A ticket-only policy has been introduced for away fans for this Saturday, available up to the day before the game. Port Vale supporters will not be able to buy tickets on the day of the game.
Chief Inspector Martin Whitelegg, in charge of policing for the match, said: “Our aim is to ensure the large gathering of supporters from both sides can visit the Prostar to watch the game safely without disturbance.
“We will have sufficient police officers available to police the crowd, manage the influx of traffic and to deal firmly with anyone causing trouble.”
He added it is considered to be a challenging fixture.

Talk about over kill and making a mountain out of a mole hill.
4 arrests last year. WOW.
Obviously the local constabulary are a few bob down in their budget so lets send a hundred plus coppers to the game and pass the charges onto Shrewsbury FC.
Unbelievable, just stick to sheep rustling boys and leave the football club alone.
7000 fans, 100 plus police ha ha ha.
Give me a break we don’t have that many down Villa Park for 37,000 fans.
