Starter homes plan on ex-brownfield site

Friday 2nd October 2009, 11:29AM BST.

A former brownfield site is set to be transformed to create 10 homes in Shrewsbury.

The “low cost” starter homes will be built on the corner of Belle Vue and Betton Street on the former British Oxygen Cylinder depot, if planning is approved. Plans have been submitted to Shropshire Council this week and if approved work would start “straight away” to tear down the old warehouse.

In its place seven two-bedroom terraced houses, one town house, a ground floor flat and three-bedroom duplex apartment will be built.

All of the houses would have small gardens along with the ground floor apartment, and one parking space.

The project is being developed by Claremont Properties with 2scale Architects and Designers acting as the agents.

Nick Fisher, from the agents, said: “We will start straight away if permission is granted.

“We’ve had a lot of local support from residents as it’s been an eyesore for many years.

“It was the old BOC warehouse where they used to store gas cylinders.

“The rest of the site was used by Tarmac for parking and it was a taxi rank.”

But Mansel Williams, Shropshire Council ward member for Belle Vue, said he would reserve judgement on the plans until he had seen them after they were submitted and withdrawn earlier in the year.

He said the original plans showed homes that were too small for families to live in and he hoped the new plans made the homes bigger.

Councillor Williams said: “The site does need a sensible form of development.”

Three three-bedroom houses are already being built by the developers at the site by converting existing buildings.

Mr Fisher said he was not sure what the cost of the development would be but he said the build should take between nine months and a year to complete.

The council is expected to make a decision on the plan by December 30.
