Simpson warning to five star Town
Friday 2nd October 2009, 12:20PM BST.
Shrewsbury Town will bid to end a 14-year cycle by recording five successive Football League victories at Morecambe tomorrow.
Not since 1995-6 – when they won seven on the trot in the early stages of the campaign – have Town strung together a nap-hand of consecutive victories.
That opportunity comes at Christie Park tomorrow, but manager Paul Simpson has warned his side to avoid a repeat of last season.
Town made the trip to Morecambe in September in good form but slipped to a 1-0 defeat to an early goal from Rene Howe – a result which signalled the start of a long winless streak on the road.
And Simpson is anxious his side continue to capitalise on a good run of form which has helped them pick up 20 points from their first 10 games.
“You need to be two points a game to be promoted,” he said. “If we did that and finished the season on 92, I think we will be promoted.
“I know we are going to get a sticky patch at some point. What we have to do is make sure we don’t get the sticky patch now like we did last year.
“We were on a good run, we went to Morecambe and we didn’t start the game right. Maybe I have to accept I picked the wrong side as well and we ended up on a bit of a dodgy run.
“We have to make sure we carry this good run on for as long as we can and if and when we do get that bad result, we react in the right way and nip it in the bud as quickly as we can.”
With no fresh injury worries, Simpson is again likely to name an unchanged team.
And, despite Morecambe starting the weekend in 19th position, the Town boss is wary of the threat.
“We have had a good run of late but I want another victory tomorrow,” he added. “Morecambe is never an easy place to go and they have got some good individual players.
“I know the mentality they have up there. They will be fired up for it because they have this thing that they are only little Morecambe – I think it’s a load of rubbish. They are becoming a good football club.”
